Büyükçekmece est connue pour son potentiel agricole et touristique. Elle s’est considérablement développée dans les années 1980, alors que sa population augmentait de jour en jour.
Grâce aux initiatives d’urbanisme prises après 1994 (réseau de drainage, parcs, protection de l’environnement, mise sous terre des réseaux d’énergie et de télécommunication), Büyükçekmece est devenue un arrondissement moderne.
La municipalité de Büyükçekmece a mis en œuvre des projets culturels remarquables en coopération avec l’Union européenne et d’autres institutions.
